How Things Work: Exploring Mechanical Engineering

(Grades 2-4)

Kids building marble roller coaster in mechanical engineering camp

Mechanical Engineers are responsible for designing a huge variety of products used every day from tools and engines to power plants and robots. They also investigate failures. If you like projects that move, hurling ping pong balls, and crashing into walls, Exploring Mechanical Engineering is for you!

Explore simple machines and build a catapult that can throw the farthest or accurately hit a single target. Learn how sound works and create a pair of noise-reducing headphones. Discover the importance of safety engineering and design a vehicle that will protect a passenger (raw egg) during a head-on collision. Use your knowledge of potential and kinetic energy to construct a marble roller coaster with gravity-defying loops and turns!
